Tested by Nintendo Revised on Switch OLED
Game runs version 1.00.00 on cart. Revision 000.
Options that can be selected from the main menu:
“Offline Play”
“How to Play”
“Settings”
“Credits”
Other options are completely blacked out.
When going to offline play, you can play with offline bots, and there are 8 maps available to play. This offline mode allows only for Jason to be played, chasing down the “counselors,” which are the innocent bystanders.
The offline mode doesn’t allow any play with the counselors, this is limited to only online mode.
Played the game on all 8 maps, and the cartridge definitely has them all on board. Three of the maps do seem to be smaller versions of other maps, though.
Difficulty options are Easy, Normal or Hard.
Also, this mode can be customized to have only 1 to 7 counselors running around.
There is also the Challenge Mode, which gives you specific objectives to complete. There are 10 challenges in total – all available on the cart.
However, some of the objectives require a specific version of Jason. There are 6 Jason’s that can be unlocked, but in order to unlock them, you have to level up in the game. The only way to level up is by gaining CP (Customization Points), which can only be earned online. Since it’s impossible to unlock any of the locked Jasons, we are left with only two Jasons and some objectives in the challenge mode cannot be completed. Although, most of the challenges are able to be completed.
Challenge 6 seems to be bugged. There are two characters that bump into each other and they keep walking into each other seemingly forever. This can cause hiccups to complete the challenge.
Challenge 7 also has an issue where a character detects Jason even when you are trying to sneakily come up behind him. This character can even see Jason through entire walls! This challenge also caused frustration but you can complete the challenge as well.
Completing the challenges does unlock stuff for the counselors. Which appear to be dances or poses. But without being able to play as the counselors, we were unable to test what these unlocks actually do.
The other thing that is accessible for offline play is the Virtual Cabin, which basically gives you the ability to walk around a cabin and it gives you historical information about Jason, the counselors, and other facts about the franchise.
As for performance and bugs, the game runs okay, but it does have a lot of stutters/frame rate drops. On challenges 7-10, the stutters seemed more noticeable.
Noticeable pop-in.
There are also moments where the game glitches while doing a kill, and it doesn’t show the actual kill, it instead puts the camera somewhere else. This happened a couple of times.
Sometimes the game animations are buggy. For example, when stalking a counselor from afar, you may notice where there are skips in animation. On one occasion, the characters were going to sit on a sofa. Instead of being a smooth transition, it was literally one moment standing, skip, and then the character was sitting.
There are videos of more bugs out there, but we didn't encounter them in this test.
Facial animations for the counselors are pretty ugly, and look pretty stupid on some occasions and the hair just looks plain bad.
Jason himself looks pretty solid. To be fair, it seems like the character animations look pretty bad on other platforms too, so we shouldn’t expect too much out of the Switch version.
Overall, this is very much an online experience. But there is still some fun to be had offline and there is actual content on the cart, if one spends time with the challenges or playing under specific maps with bots, although with bugs of course!
No DRM. Played handheld on my OLED switch.
