Tested by Nintendo Revised on Switch OLED
Version 1.00.02 on cart. There is a patch available to version 1.03.03 at the time of testing (May 2024).
Completed the game which entails completing all levels. Each level was completed 100%, which consists of de-crystalizing the level and finding all challenges within the levels. Additionally, we found all challenges, completed them at the highest level of difficulty which earned us the Crystal badge for each of the challenges. Earning all the badges also allowed us to unlock all costumes for the Smurfs.
Lastly, we completed all quests and obtained all Signature Capacities.
For upgrades, the player can upgrade their arsenal to level 7, otherwise known as Crystal level. This requires a lot of currency to achieve. We did achieve Crystal level for one substance type but was only able to achieve up to level 6 for the remaining 3 substances. The reason for this is because the upgrades are priced really high, and therefore it would require hours of grinding to complete.
Encountered a sound bug. As soon as we loaded a new game file and the first level began, we were met with a very silent world. The only sound that occurred were the Smurfs talking for specific dialogue. No ambient noises, music, footsteps or noises when jumping or doing specific actions. Reset my game entirely, and unfortunately this did not fix the issue. Decided to turn the Nintendo Switch off entirely, restart the game, and only then did the issue resolve itself. This issue never occurred again after that. Sound worked well from this point forward.
The Smurfs are very repetitive. They will repeat the same lines over and over again, and this got really annoying for me about halfway through the game. Thankfully, there is a way to turn down, or turn the voices off entirely. This is a double-edged sword, though. This will turn off the voices for the Smurfs during cutscenes and during important segments. For example, a Smurf will mention when there is a hidden challenge room nearby. Some of these are well hidden, and so having them mention that one is nearby is very helpful. This issue is based on preference and tolerance levels of the player.
Unfortunately, there are times when the voices are not synced with the characters lips.
This game performs better than the first game, Mission Vileaf. This does not mean that the game is perfect by any means.
There is some slowdown that occurs from time to time. Sometimes, the game will stutter for a quick moment and then quickly fix itself. Additionally, there were two specific challenge arenas that had frame rate issues, such as constant stutters. The challenge arenas are as follows: “When PushAll Comes to Shove” and “A Smurfy Hike”. These two challenges are not very optimized. But overall, I was happy with the performance, and felt that it was an improvement over the first game. Note that this game also has a lot of enemies on screen that are constantly attacking, and even with all of this, the game still ran well.
The game also does look a little blurry. To add to this, there will be some pop in, as well as some shadow flickering from time to time.
On two occasions the game wouldn’t allow us to move my character. Not sure what caused this issue, but it happened after a cutscene played out. After said cutscene, we should have been able to control the character, but we were not able to move at all. Thankfully, the menus still worked and so we were able to restart from the last checkpoint and continue.
Speaking of the menus there is also an issue that appears while navigating them. For some reason, when accessing the menu, it would downgrade our level back down to level 2 or 3 from 6. From here, if we went to another portion of the menu, and toggled back and forth, it would level us back up to the proper level. Unfortunately, it would take a few toggles back and forth to get back up, since the game would only level back once. (From 2 to 3, from 3 to 4 and so on). This isn’t a huge issue per say, but its an annoying one, because it did cause confusion as to why my levels were dropping.
Another issue arose regarding the completion status of a specific level, Volcanic Panic. It shows as 259% completed. Initially, we completed the level at 98% and were missing one out of two challenges. We went back into the level to attempt to find the challenge we missed, but also to get 100% de-crystallization. For some reason, this level dropped the 98% to about 50%. Thankfully, all the crystals needed to get rid of did reappear, as they are usually removed entirely once destroyed. Once we finished the level, the percentage count went up to 259%, but the menu does show that we 100% the world (The Land of Fire) that includes this level.
The game has its issues, as discussed above, but we enjoyed it overall still!
